Welcome to WADE, The Washington Association of Diabetes Educators

URGENT: Input needed by you TODAY—Diabetes, Renal, Oncology and Nutrition Support Dietitians and others who may be affected by the outcome of this meeting!

Hello all WADE members; specifically RD's - You may have received an email from WSAND last Friday stating that they are going to meet with the Department of Health tomorrow and Friday. They included a link to respond to input. We would like to make sure we take this opportunity and stress how important that input will be for our practices.

We are asking that you click on the link (below) and provide input (suggested statement below) and also send this out to ALL WA State RD's you know whether or not you think they are on this email list. It's ok to get it twice! This is incredibly important to all of us!

RE:  The Washington State Department of Health does not recognize Registered Dietitians current practice in our state which includes our role in nutrition related medication adjustments or device instruction using institutional approved protocols.

Please respond TODAY to the WSAND request for comments via Survey Monkey regarding the upcoming meeting tomorrow June 27 and 28, 2019 about Certified Dietitian rules.

Recommended statement:

  • Request for the acknowledgement that the Registered Dietitian/Certified Dietitian can:  “Initiate, implement, and adjust protocol- or physician-order-driven nutrition-related medication orders and pharmacotherapy plans in accordance and established policy or protocols consistent  with organizations policy and procedure.”   (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Scope of Practice 2017)
  • Acknowledgement that the RD/CD can initiate and perform nutrition related services including nutrition-related medication adjustment and device instruction  based on proven competency and protocol driven guidance
  • Encouragement to have the DOH recognize our skills and authority in the area of medication and nutrition interactions (i.e. protocol-based medication adjustment)—especially in the areas of Diabetes, Nephrology, Oncology and Nutrition Support.  (may not be needed with the above point?)
  • Please include your name, contact info and Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) when you email it to Jennifer.

Please send the same response to Jennifer Okemah ([email protected]) to be collected and included in the on-site DOH discussion this week. Attached, you will find the DOH agenda and log in info if you would like to attend physically or virtually. We anticipate Friday session to be more specific to language changes we are requesting.

Thank you for your help!
